This medication is used to treat adults and children having asthma, while it is used only to treat adults who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]. Advair Diskus is a powder formulation of two medicines - Fluticasone - a synthetic steroid that reduces inflammation of the airways, and Salmeterol - a beta2-agonist that makes airway muscles relax and makes breathing easier for individuals who have difficulty in breathing.
This two-in-one combination, when taken over a period of time, is able to build up body resistance to allergens, thereby reducing the risk of an asthmatic attack, and preventing COPD - chronic bronchitis or emphysema - from turning worse. However, once an asthma attack has begun, or if COPD has turned worse, then this medicine will not be of any help.
