Garcinia indica is a slender evergreen tree with dropping branches and five to eight large seeds. The fruit has an agreeable flavor and a sweetish sour taste. Kokam contains 10% malic acid and a little tartaric or citric acid. It is used as a garnish to give a sour taste to curries and also for preparing cooling syrups during the summer months. Cambojin, garcinol, isogarcinol, Hydroxy Citric Acid and camboginol were identified from the fruit.

The fruit is anthelmintic, cardiotonic, and useful in piles, dysentery, tumors, pains and heart complaints. Syrup made from the fruit juice is given in bilious affections. It is also known to reduce weight. The root is astringent.
