Guggulu is excreted by the mucous membranes of the body, during the course of which it stimulates and disinfects their secretions. It also contains guggulsterones Z and E, guggulsterols I - V, two diterperoids and a terpene hydrocarbon named cembrane A. The gum resin showed different pharmacological properties, uses and clinical application. It is astringent, expectorant, aphrodisiac, demulcent, carminative, alterative, antispasmodic and emmenagogue. It is useful in snake bite and scorpion sting, infertility, arthritis, leprosy, impotence, sterility, in liver disorders and hemiplegia.
